Paddy Power’s Latest Advertising Phenomenon

Last year on this very blog we commented on Paddy Power’s controversial advertising techniques and the Irish outfit’s subsequent record-busting profits. The two, it seemed, went hand-in-hand, with gamers responding to its cheeky take on advertising.

Now, Paddy has ramped up it’s offering in the build-up to the World Cup in Brazil by tweeting an aerial picture of the Amazon rainforest with huge sections cleared of trees to declare a good luck message to the England team – “C’mon England – PP”.

At first glance it is a cheap marketing ploy, but the scores of complaints were countered with a second aerial shot, stating “We didn’t give the Amazon a Brazilian”. The gaming provider also posted images of how “nerds” created the shots using hi-tech digital imaging software.

Personally, I love it. Not only is it relevant to any England fan, but it also raises awareness of an important world issue – the destruction of the rainforest – at a time when the world is gripped by football fever. Paddy included the real message with the second tweet – “Every 90 minutes an area the size of 122 football pitches is chopped down and no one gives a monkey’s”.
